What is your favourite flower? I hear this question again and again. People don’t really believe me when I tell them I don’t have a favourite flower. But this is the truth. I don’t have a favourite flower, I love them all. Indeed, I enjoy working with flowers even more when my sense of smell is delighted too. And, perhaps because I’m not the biggest fan of the cold days of winter (leaving aside the colourful Christmas time which i enjoy), the spring flowers play a special place in my imagination. I don’t like them more than I like other flowers, but their freshness, the smell of hyacinths, daffodils, lilies of the valley, or, later in spring, the scent of peonies, are making me more creative when I use them.
Also, spring flowers have most interesting stories, and I always enjoy reading these stories and sharing them with others. Did you know that the peony originated in Asia and that it’s chineese name is Sho yo, which translates into „the most beautiful”? Or that, on the 7th of March, the hyacinth has its international day and that there are over 30 different species of this flower? Or that the tulips come from the Himalaya mountains, that they arrived in Europe via Turkey and they only became popular in the Netherlands around 1600? Maybe you’ll look at them differently now, when you know these details about their long journey here. Even the word tulip has its origins in the turkish word turban. There are more than 100 species of snowdrops, and the Galanthus Reginae-Olgae is in bloom in autumn, not in spring. When you receive a flower bouquet, it can be even more enjoyable to know a bit about the wonderful flowers in it.
So, yes, the spring flowers bouquets are simply gorgeous. And, in March, we are giving them to all the wonderful women around us. I am beyond happy to see women carrying flowers on the 1st and the 8th of March. I would be even happier if I would see them like that also during the rest of the year. Give flowers! This is the simplest and the most moving gesture we can make when we want to say Thank you! or Congratulations! or I love you!
